ORDER OF SERVICE

Introduction

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen.

Let us pray. (A brief moment of silence follows.)

Almighty and everlasting God,

who in your tender love towards the human race sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon him our flesh

and to suffer death upon the cross:

grant that we may follow the example of his patience and humility, and also be made partakers of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

All: Amen.

1. JESUS IN AGONY IN THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE

A reading from the Gospel according to Mark.

They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’ He took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be stressed and agitated. And he said to them, ‘I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake.’ And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. He said, ‘Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want.’ Mark 14.32-36

All: Jesus our friend and our brother, through' your life, your death and Resurrection, you have shown us how to live in love. May we always follow your example, living a life of compassion, in the search for peace through justice for all your people. Amen.

2. JESUS IS CONDEMNED TO DEATH

A reading from the Gospel according to Mark.

Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none. For many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony did not agree. Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, ‘We heard him say, “I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands”.’ But even on this point their testimony did not agree. Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, ‘Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?’ But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?’ Jesus said, ‘I am; and “you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power”, and “coming with the clouds of heaven”.’ Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, ‘Why do we still need witnesses? You have heard his blasphemy! What is your decision?’ All of them condemned him as deserving death. Mark 14.55-64

3. JESUS CARRIES HIS CROSS

A reading from the Gospel according to Mark.

After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. Mark 15.20

All: Jesus our friend and our brother, through' your life, your death and Resurrection, you have shown us how to live in love. May we always follow your example, living a, life of compassion, in the search for peace through justice for all your people. Amen.

4. JESUS MEETS HIS BLESSED MOTHER.

A reading from the Gospel according to Mark.

Jesus’ father and mother were amazed at what Simeon said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, “Many Jews will fall and many will rise because of this boy. He will be a sign from God that some will not accept. So the secret thoughts of many will be made known. And the things that happen will be painful for you—like a sword cutting through your heart.” His mother treasured all these things in her heart.

(Luke 2:33-35; 51b)

All: Lord Jesus if, by our sins, we caused you pain and anguish in the past, we pray that by God's assisting grace it shall be so no more; rather may we be more loving and faithful until our lives end. Amen.

5. SIMON CYRENE HELPS JESUS CARRY THE CROSS

A reading from the Gospel according to Mark.

They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. Mark 15.21

6. JESUS SPEAKS TO THE WOMEN OF JERUSALEM

A reading from the Gospel according to Luke.

A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him. But Jesus turned to them and said, ‘Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For the days are surely coming when they will say, “Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.” Then they will begin to say to the mountains, “Fall on us”; and to the hills, “Cover us.” For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?’

Luke 23.27-31

7. JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS

A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew

Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Matthew 27:27-31

8. JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS

A reading from the Gospel according to John

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). Here they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle. Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read:| JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. John 19:16-20

9. JESUS ENTRUSTS HIS MOTHER TO THE BELOVED DISCIPLE

A reading from the Gospel according to John.

Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son.’ Then He said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

(John 19. 23 – 27).

All: Lord Jesus, your mother and your dearest friend stayed with you to the bitter end, yet even while racked with pain you ministered to them: be with all broken families today and care for those who long for companionship. Give us a love for one another that is stronger even than the fear of death. Amen

10. JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS

A reading from the Gospel according to Mark.

At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, ‘Listen, he is calling for Elijah.’ And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, ‘Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.’ Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.

Mark 15.34-37

11. JESUS IS TAKEN DOWN FROM THE CROSS

A reading from the Gospel according to Mark.

It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.

Mark 15:42-45

12. JESUS IS BURIED

A reading from the Gospel according to Mark.

Then Joseph bought a linen cloth, and taking down the body, wrapped it in the linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. He then rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mark 15.46

Let us pray for the coming of God’s kingdom in the words our Saviour taught us.

The Lord’s Prayer is said by all.

Most merciful God, who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ

delivered and saved the world: grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross

we may triumph in the power of his victory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
